For PARCA PARCA eNews – Mar. 1, 2019 – The American College of Radiology, European Society of Radiology, Radiology Society of North America, Society for Imaging Informatics in Medicine, European Society of Medical Imaging Informatics, Canadian Association of Radiologists, and American Association of Physicists in Medicine collaborated on a 34-page draft statement concerning ethical issues surrounding the use of AI in radiology.
The preliminary draft has not been endorsed by any of the sponsoring societies, rather the draft was published to spur debate and discussion among all interested parties, who are encouraged to submit comments by April 7, 2019. (published site)
The thrust of the statement is to begin forging an ethical basis for guiding the further development of AI technology in the practice of radiology. The draft statement covers the ethics of data, clinical radiology data, operational and business use of data. and pre-training, data ownership and privacy.
In addition the statement addresses issues around ethics of algorithms, and decision making, transparency and computer-human interactions.
As part of the statement the authors acknowledge the duty of the radiological community to actively pursue AI to improve patient care while maintaining primary role in monitoring the technology.
The draft guidance can be downloaded from the ACR Data Science Institute. Comments are welcomed until April 7. A final statement is expected to to be released later this year.
